Tropicalspasmo: Letters From The Orient

TROPICALSPASMO: Letters From The Orient

The work presented in this show is the result of a 2-month artist in residency program undertaken by Hobart-based printmaker Olivia Hittmann in Beijing. This period in China has evidently bolstered Hittmann’s unremitting desire to parody ‘out-dated’ ideas such as Post-Colonialism and Orientalism.

Tropicalspasmo aspires to avenge the absence of a utopia in this world and in doing so it manifests an unabashed artificiality that is gripped by the fatalistic cravings of a punch-drunk, quixotic fool - as well as an obsession with printed paraphernalia. The imagery presented here was collected during the residency period in Beijing and has been collaged and screen printed in Hittmann’s studio in Hobart.

it's been so lonely - 4 colour offset print on newsprint paper - edition of roughly 51 000. April 2011.

The Mercury Newspaper, the self-described Voice of Tasmania, is widely perceived as a tabloid style of News Print Media. The Classifieds Section of the paper offers the individual an opportunity to advertise material to the public, often the material being of a private nature. On the 1st of April 2011 roughly 51 000 copies of The Mercury Newspaper were printed. Within the Classifieds section of this issue of the paper I have placed an excerpt of the lyrics from Nothing Compares To You

I Drove All Night Poster Series - screen prints - each print = edition of 5

each poster is a screen printed enlargement of an actual portion of the Mercury Newspaper. Over 5 days I placed 5 separate ads in the Mercury. Each print has a bit of Roy Orbison collaged amongst other classified ads. The poster prints are available for sale from Bett Gallery Hobart - http://www.bettgallery.com.au/artists/hittmann/idroveallnight/index.html

fruitless poster print series - psychedelic pineapple animation by selena

the fruitless poster print show was held in september of 2010.
248 unique state prints were exhibited and punters at the opening were invited to claim a print by writing their name on the back of their favourite.
the prints were free of charge, however some people insisted on paying what they could afford (only the impoverished friends of the artist, not the fancy-pants art schwangs. some artists wanted to do an art exchange, and one guy gave me a thick pamphlet that i think was supposed to be a book).
there are some left over prints that are up for grabbing. fully consensual. please email olivia.hittmann@gmail.com to request a fruitless print. do it TODAY!!
